CHIMNEY CAP REPLACEMENT

Do I Need a New Chimney Cap?

If you're due for a chimney cap replacement, this isn't a service to put off. Without a chimney cap, your flue is open to the elements and unwanted visitors. Rain, snow, and debris will enter, birds and squirrels could nest inside, and embers can escape and pose fire risks. The result: water damage, odors, draft problems, costly repairs...the list goes on.

Signs you need a new chimney cap or guard:

  • Missing or damaged cap at the chimney top
  • Animals (birds, squirrels, raccoons, etc.) nesting in the chimney
  • Debris, leaves, and twigs blocking the flue
  • Water stains or rust inside the fireplace or around the hearth
  • Musty odors coming from the chimney
  • Sparks and embers escaping during fires

A quality chimney cap is one of the most cost-effective ways to protect your chimney and prevent the expensive repairs that follow water infiltration or animal damage. Reach out today.

WHY IT MATTERS

What Does a Chimney Cap Do?

When most think of a chimney cap, they think of weather protection - but it really does so much more! It's a small investment with big returns.

Prevents Water Infiltration

Caps keep rain and snow out of the flue and chimney structure.

Extends Chimney Life

Caps protect the flue and crown from weather damage, preventing costly deterioration.

Blocks Animals & Pests

Caps should stop birds, squirrels, raccoons, and other wildlife from entering the flue.

Reduces Debris Blockages

Caps work hard to keep leaves, twigs, and wind-blown debris from clogging the flue.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Chimney Caps & Guards: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a single-flue and a multi-flue cap?

The biggest difference between a single-flue chimney cap and a multi-flue chimney cap comes down to how many flue openings your chimney has and how the cap is mounted. Choosing the right style is critical - an undersized or wrong-style cap can leak, blow off in high winds, or fail to keep animals out.

Single-flue caps are designed for chimneys with one flue opening, mount directly to the flue tile using clamps or set screws, are the most affordable option and quickest to install, and are ideal for smaller homes or chimneys serving a single appliance. They are also easier to replace individually if damaged.

Multi-flue caps are a single large cover that spans multiple flue openings at once, bolt to the chimney crown rather than individual flues, provide full coverage of the entire chimney top including the crown itself, are better for chimneys with 2+ flues, help protect the crown from water damage and freeze-thaw cracking, and are typically made from heavier-gauge stainless steel or copper for stability.

For Columbus homes with multiple flues, we usually recommend a multi-flue cap. These cost more upfront, but provides better protection for the crown and is more cost-effective long-term than replacing individual single-flue caps. Our team will inspect your chimney, count the flues, and recommend the right style during your free estimate.

How do I know if my chimney cap is damaged or missing?
Most homeowners can't see the top of their chimney from the ground, so chimney cap damage often goes unnoticed until problems start showing up inside the home. By the time you notice symptoms, water or animals may have already caused damage that requires more extensive repair work.

Warning signs to watch for include:

  • water stains on the ceiling or walls near the fireplace
  • musty or smoky odors inside the home especially after rain
  • animals, nests, or scratching sounds coming from the chimney
  • leaves, twigs, or debris falling into the firebox
  • rust spots on the damper, hearth, or fireplace grate
  • sparks or embers escaping during fires
Our certified technicians use specialized cameras and rooftop inspections to evaluate your chimney cap's condition — you don't need to climb on the roof yourself to find out what's going on up there.
What types of chimney caps are available?

Chimney caps come in several styles, each designed for specific chimney configurations and homeowner needs. The right cap depends on the number of flues, the chimney's construction, and the type of appliance venting through it.

Common chimney cap styles include:

  • Single-flue caps designed for chimneys with one flue - affordable, easy to install, and the most common option
  • Multi-flue caps, a single large cover that protects multiple flues at once - ideal for chimneys with two or more openings
  • Top-mount caps that bolt directly to the top of the chimney crown, providing maximum coverage and weather protection
  • Custom caps built to fit unusual chimney shapes, oversized flues, or decorative architectural styles
  • Specialty appliance caps designed specifically for gas, wood-burning, or pellet stove venting systems

We assess your chimney's size, flue count, and venting type before recommending the right style - there's no one-size-fits-all when it comes to chimney protection.

What material is best for a chimney cap?

Material choice is the single biggest factor in how long your chimney cap will last and how well it protects your home. Each material has trade-offs in cost, durability, and appearance.

  • Stainless steel is our most-recommended option. It's highly rust-resistant, lightweight, affordable, and lasts 20+ years with minimal maintenance. It performs exceptionally well in Ohio's freeze-thaw climate and resists pitting from acidic flue gases.
  • Copper is the premium choice. It develops a beautiful natural patina over time, lasts 50+ years, and adds significant curb appeal - especially on historic homes. The upfront cost is higher, but copper caps often outlast the chimney itself.
  • Galvanized steel is budget-friendly but short-lived. The zinc coating wears off within 5–10 years in Ohio weather, exposing the steel underneath to rust. We rarely recommend it for long-term installations.
  • Aluminum is lightweight and rust-free, but soft. It's prone to denting from hail, falling branches, or heavy snow. Typical lifespan is 10–15 years before warping or corrosion sets in.
  • Cast aluminum is heavier and more durable than standard aluminum, with a decorative cast finish. It's a reasonable middle-ground option, though still not as long-lasting as stainless or copper.

For Columbus and central Ohio homes, we almost always recommend stainless steel for the best balance of price and longevity, or copper when budget allows and curb appeal matters. Our team will walk you through the options during your free estimate and help you choose the material that fits your home, climate, and budget.

Can a chimney cap help prevent animals from getting in?

Yes, preventing animal intrusion is one of the most common reasons Columbus homeowners call us for a chimney cap. An open or damaged flue is essentially a hollow tree to wildlife: warm, sheltered, and predator-free. A properly sized, well-installed cap with quality mesh screening is the single most effective barrier against animal entry.

Animals commonly found in uncapped Ohio chimneys include:

  • chimney swifts and other migratory birds (federally protected - removal during nesting season is restricted by law)
  • squirrels (gray, red, and flying) that fall in and can't climb back up smooth flue tile
  • raccoons which often use chimneys as den sites to raise kits in spring
  • bats which can squeeze through openings as small as 3/8 of an inch
  • starlings, sparrows, and other small birds that build nests on the smoke shelf
  • occasionally snakes, mice, or insects following the warm draft

What makes a cap effective at keeping animals out includes heavy-gauge stainless steel mesh with openings small enough to block bats and mice (typically 3/4 inch or smaller), secure mounting hardware that resists raccoons who are strong enough to pry off poorly-installed caps, full coverage of the flue opening with no gaps between the cap and the crown, and corrosion-resistant materials that won't rust through and create new entry points.

If animals are already nesting in your chimney, do not light a fire and do not attempt removal yourself - both can be dangerous for you and inhumane for the animals. Our team will perform a camera inspection to identify what's inside, coordinate humane removal (and wait out protected nesting periods when required), thoroughly clean any nesting debris or droppings, and then install a properly fitted cap to prevent re-entry.

"Extremely honest company. Called Blackburn to evaluate and replace a cap after a bird fell into my fireplace. Blackburns came out to repair and advised me that my existing cap was in serviceable condition and properly installed - the bird must have squeezed through an extremely minuscule opening. There was no charge for the estimate."
