Can I Add Gas Logs to
My Wood Fireplaces?

Yes, in most cases you can. Most wood-burning fireplaces can take a gas log set when the firebox, damper, and chimney are in good condition and a gas supply can be connected at the hearth. What matters is confirming the fireplace is compatible, as a poorly matched or DIY set can draft poorly, look incomplete, or create safety issues if the venting and fuel setup aren’t evaluated before installation.

We’ll confirm your wood fireplace is ready when:

  • The firebox and damper are intact and suited for a gas log set
  • The chimney and flue draft correctly
  • Any needed lining, damper, or masonry work is identified
  • A gas line is already at the hearth - or planned - before installation day
  • The set is sized to your opening so the flame and look perform as intended

Blackburns starts with an assessment of the hearth, flue, and fuel setup, after which we can recommend the gas log set that best fits your wood fireplace.

Why Make the Switch To
Gas Fireplace Logs?

There are a lot of benefits to switching from wood to gas, but professional gas log installation isn’t just dropping ceramic logs in the firebox. Correct sizing, venting, and placement deliver realistic flame, safer operation, and a fireplace you’ll actually use on weeknights - not only holidays.

On-Demand Flame

Light a fire in seconds - no kindling, no waiting for the draft to catch.

Less Mess, Less Maintenance

Cut down on ash, creosote buildup, and wood-burn cleanup.

Safer, Controlled Combustion

No worrying about logs spilling out of the fireplace or stray sparks landing on rugs.

Realistic Look & Heat

Quality logs and burners are matched to your firebox for a natural-looking glow.

Better Everyday Convenience

Enjoy the hearth on busy evenings without planning a wood run first.

Quick Turn-Off

Once you're done, simply flip the switch - no putting out flames or waiting for embers to die.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Gas Logs: Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between vented and unvented gas logs?
  • Vented gas logs typically use your existing chimney or flue and are designed for a more traditional wood-fire look, with combustion products going up the chimney while the damper stays open.
  • Unvented (vent-free) sets are built to operate without a flue and can put more heat into the room, but they must meet room-size limits, oxygen-depletion sensor requirements, and local code rules.

A small room, a tightly sealed house, or other unvented appliances can rule out a vent-free set even if the fireplace looks suitable. We’ll help you choose based on your fireplace, venting, and how you want to use the hearth so the set is both comfortable and code-appropriate.

Do I still need chimney service after gas log installation?
Yes. Vented gas logs still use the chimney, so moisture, debris, and animals can affect the flue even when you’re no longer burning wood. An annual check helps the damper, cap, and liner keep drafting correctly so odors don’t spill back into the room. Unvented sets don’t exhaust through a flue, but the surround, gas connections, and any unused chimney above the fireplace still benefit from periodic checks. We’ll recommend a maintenance plan that matches the type of logs you choose instead of a one-size-fits-all sweeping schedule.
How long does gas log installation take?
Many straightforward installs are completed in a single visit once the fireplace is ready and gas service is available at the hearth. On site we typically place the grate and burner, connect the logs, check the flame pattern, and walk you through operation and shutoff. Extra time is needed if the chimney must be cleaned first, the damper needs a stop or adjustment, or a new gas line has to be run. We outline that sequence and the expected timeline before we start so you know whether you’re looking at one appointment or a short series of visits.
Will gas logs look realistic?

Modern log sets are molded with bark texture, char detail, ember glow, and layered flame so they read as a real fire rather than a single yellow ribbon. Realism depends on matching log size, burner style, and firebox depth and width - not on picking the prettiest catalog photo.

Why does proper sizing matter? An oversized set can look crowded and block flames, while a set that’s too small leaves empty space and creates a thinner fire. We measure the opening and help you choose a configuration that fills the hearth proportionally so the finished look fits how you actually use the fireplace.

Although I had received estimates for chimney work from other companies, as soon as I met the crew from Blackburns Chimney Services, I knew they were the company I wanted for the work I needed done. They didn't disappoint. They came the same day and did the chimney work, as well as extra work inside on my fireplace. I highly recommend this company.

"Trevor was here last week for my annual fireplace inspection. He tarped the whole area where he would be working and cleaned up so well that you wouldn't have known he was there! He also did a thorough check of the roof to be sure everything was in order up there! He took photos of the inside of my fireplace as well as the roof and explained everything he'd done. I am very pleased with Blackburn Chimney Sweeping."
